Session: Outreach in the Enterprise: Using Hackathons to Create Culture Change at HP Inc.
Date/Time: Tuesday March 27 - Track 2 - 1:45pm
Abstract:
When HP split into two companies in 2015 (Hewlett-Packard Enterprise and HP Inc.) Hewlett-Packard Enterprise took the developer program, leaving HP Inc. in a unique position as one of the largest tech companies in the world to start a new developer program from scratch. One of the biggest challenges has been exposing our traditionally siloed business units and engineering communities to the idea of opening up our technology to each other, and to the outside world. We started the HP Connect the Tech global HP internal hackathon program to help drive innovation by encouraging collaborative transformation across cross-functional teams. Turns out it's about WAY more than just tough challenges and clever code. I'll tell the story of how we measure success, what we've learned, and how we're leveraging the program to find, expose, test and build our APIs, and how we plan to scale our internal and external developer programs.

Workshop: The A to Z of Practitioner Content Marketing
Date/Time: Tuesday March 27 - Track 1 Room - 10:00am
Abstract:
In this workshop, we will define practitioner content marketing and how it compares to public relations, demand gen, and influencer marketing. We will then build a practitioner content marketing strategy with workshop participants.
Marketing is moving from using a megaphone to creating targeted conversations. Developers do not respond well to traditional marketing, but they also do not want to be the last to know about features, functionality, and techniques. They look for vendors that can impart technical value with each piece of content they put out and ignore obvious product promotion pieces unless they include content that makes tool or technique adoption easier.
Having these targeted technical conversations requires a new strategy — practitioner content marketing. Practitioners who sit outside your organization but are willing to put their name on content for your organization is more credible, results in better quality leads, and increases your company's share of voice in conversations important for your industry segment. Practitioner content market is a way to let the market, prospects, and customers know that you speak their language and can provide value beyond features and functionality.

By the way, data collection and analysis are never ending.

If you are trying to build traction around your API, and create a "developer-first" culture, you better understand your target developer segmentation, so you can create the best developer experience. At DocuSign, we make it possible for our 300,000 customers and 200 million users (in 188 countries) to sign, send and manage documents anytime, anywhere, and on any device. And 58% of all those transactions go through the DocuSign API, which has grown exponentially over the last couple years. Creating the right experience has been critical to that success, and that starts with understanding our target developer segments.

Session: Beyond the Portal: An Innovative Developer Engagement Approach
Date/Time: Monday March 26 - Track 2 Room - 10:45am
Abstract:
As Developer Relations professionals, we've known for some time how important it is to go to where the developers are. It is a lot easier and more effective than getting them to come to us. Problem is, we don't have as much control on the environment where they go because it's not our environment. Sure, we know they're using Google Search, on GitHub and Stack Overflow. But, we can't AB test there, measure usage/effectiveness, or control the messaging. This talk will focus on a new and innovative approach to developer engagement: "In-Product" Developer Services. At VMware, we've taken the top developer resources on our VMware {code} dev portal and packaged them into web services, accessible easily via APIs. We then worked with product teams to embed these services directly into our products—where our developers are—so they can get access to the resources they need when and where they need it. I'll talk about the services we've chosen and why, what we plan to gain from this experience, as well as review some results of our own Developer Survey that adds clarity & insight into our cloud, infrastructure, and automation developers.
