SANTA CRUZ, CA - January 7, 2015 - Developers are targeting connected devices at an increasing rate, according to Evans Data's latest Mobile Development Survey. While tablet development is waning, smartphone development is holding steady, and connected device development, for both industrial applications and more commercial wearable applications, is experiencing double digit growth.
The survey, which was conducted last month and examines over 500 developers worldwide who are targeting mobile devices, revealed that connected industrial devices have increased 191% in 2014, from 9% to 27% of mobile devices being targeted by developers. Though connected industrial devices are commonly found in factory settings, they are helping businesses expand their productivity by moving information from devices to other aggregate data pools, and facilitating much more efficient real-time advanced data analytics. Also highlighted were wearable devices, which increased 21% (from 20% to 24%).
These findings are further proof of a maturing mobile development environment for connected devices. “The measure for maturity isn’t just the number of installations or percentage of people developing for it; it’s also measured in terms of how much it is being extended to other new uses that were not originally envisioned for those platforms,” said Michael Rasalan, Director of Research at Evans Data, "For instance, in 2008, we would not have equated Android with car stereos, and now the majority of connected car application developers are targeting Android Auto."
The Evans Data Mobile Development Survey is conducted twice a year, in the spring and fall. This comprehensive report covers a wide range of topics related to development for mobile devices, including: Development Environments, Tools and SDKs, Mobility in the Enterprise and Cloud, Targeted Platforms by region, application, type and features; including Android, and iOS, HTML5 Development, Wearables, IoT and Connected Car Development, Mobile Application Optimization, Game Development, Application Monetization, Carriers and Network Optimization, Security, Technology Adoption by feature and region, Language Usage including usage by platform, and much more.
