New Evans Data Study Reports on North American Software Development Populations

SANTA CRUZ, CA, February 9, 2004 - There are more than 1.1 million developers in North America spending at least some of their time working on Open Source development projects, according to Evans Data Corporation’s new North American Developer Population Study.

"The Population Study is a breakthrough survey for Evans Data because, for the first time we're able to estimate the actual number of professional software developers in North America who spend time working with different architectures, technologies, languages and development tools. For example, EDC is the first organization to estimate that 1.1 million developers spend some of their time working on open source development projects," said Brian Cooper, Evans' research director. "The value in this survey is the capability of organizations to accurately estimate the size of their target markets before rolling out new products and services."

Other findings from the January 2004 study of North American developers:

• Well more than a half million developers in North America are spending some of their development time working on 64-bit architectures.
• Almost a quarter of a million developers in North America are active on grid computing projects.
• Clustered computing developers number just under a half million in total and account for 17% of the development population in North America.

The new North American Developer Population Study is a different type of report from Evans Data in that it details the actual number of developers working in the technology field. The study provides a resource for software vendors to help them create products that will be useful, desirable and readily accepted in the marketplace. It is recommended that this study be used in combination with its companion survey, the North American Development Survey Fall 2003, in order to completely understand the entire developer layout in North America.
