AI in Development: How Usage Varies by Developer Segment
Developers across different segments are integrating AI into their projects in distinct ways, each approach shaped by the needs of their target customers. Enterprise developers focus on data management and model creation, independent software vendors (ISVs) are embedding AI-powered features into their applications, and systems integrators (SIs) and value-added resellers (VARs) are leveraging AI-based tools to enhance their workflows. These patterns align closely with the core business needs of each segment.
Enterprise developers are more likely than other groups to be involved in designing and maintaining databases (61%) and creating, training, and managing machine learning models (59.6%). Their focus suggests a deeper investment in the data structures that support AI, whether for analytics, business logic, or broader AI-driven decision-making.
Meanwhile, ISVs are more focused on AI services within their applications, with their usage patterns spread more evenly across coding AI-specific APIs (54.9%), ML model creation (46.3%), and analytics (46.3%). For ISVs, AI is a value-add—helping differentiate their products through intelligent features and automation rather than serving as a core backend function.
On the other hand, SIs and VARs are primarily using AI-powered tools (54.3%), likely as a means of streamlining integrations and automating client solutions. While this suggests some focus on automation, their AI adoption is not exclusive to that; instead, it reflects the diverse range of services they provide across industries.
Despite these differences, a shared reality remains: AI has become a core part of software development across all major segments. Whether through data management, embedded AI features, or AI-powered development tools, companies must align their offerings with how developers are actively using AI.
