How Do Developers Want to Be Contacted?
Reaching developers effectively starts with understanding their communication preferences. According to the Developer Marketing Survey Report 2025, 66% of developers prefer a direct email when contacted about a product they have already evaluated. This remains the most popular method across all age groups.
However, preferences shift with age. Developers under 30 show a greater openness to text messages, with nearly 32% listing text as their preferred contact method—a stark contrast to older developers, who overwhelmingly favor email. In fact, nearly two-thirds of developers over 50 still prefer email, with phone calls as a distant second.
While text messages and direct emails offer similar advantages—such as tracking whether they’ve been seen—they don’t guarantee engagement. Understanding these nuances is key to optimizing developer outreach.
Are your sales and marketing strategies aligned with how developers want to be contacted? How do these trends impact your engagement approach?
