SANTA CRUZ, CA. June 10, 2014, Of the 19 million software developers in the world, 8.7 million are now writing apps targeted for mobile devices, according Evans Data’s recently released Developer Population and Demographics Study. This represents a doubling of the mobile developer population since 2010 and an increase of 700,000 in the last year. Regionally the Asia-Pacific region leads with about 46% more developers focused on mobile than the EMEA region, which includes Russia. Latin America lags behind those regions and North America in its mobile developer population.

“People who think that mobile developers are only developers who sell apps through app stores are seeing just a small part of the overall picture, ”said Janel Garvin, CEO of Evans Data Corp. ”Mobile development is becoming ubiquitous thanks to the prominence of mobile devices as the preferred client in both enterprise and consumer environments. And Cloud is the perfect enabler for mobility in these realms as well as in related Internet of Things implementations. We see no slowing of mobile development anywhere in the near future.”

Related to mobile, the Global Developer Population and Demographics Study also shows a strong current adoption of Cloud as both a development and deployment environment and a continual increase since Cloud use was first added to the population study in 2009. Other areas of interest include general and regional demographics, platform adoption, technology adoption, continuous delivery, Big data, and others.

Now in its 16th edition, Evans Data’s Worldwide Developer Population and Demographics Study is the result of exhaustive secondary research from respected sources including the World Bank data center, CIA World Factbook, US Census, Mobile World Congress, International Monetary Fund, National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), and numerous other regional and country-specific sources. These data inputs are combined in a proprietary computer model to estimate current populations and forecast population growth in the coming years.
