SANTA CRUZ, CA. July 22, 2014, In a recent global survey of software developers, 17.1% said they were working on applications for connected devices for the Internet of Things, while an additional 23% expect to begin work on them in the next 6 months. Evans Data’s survey of over 1400 developers worldwide showed that the strongest development of Internet of Things was occurring in the Asia-Pacific region where 20% said they were working on IoT projects, but the expectation of doing so was over half. North American developers lagged slightly behind the Asians with 16% working on IoT projects.
The survey, conducted in May through June of 2014 delved into the practices, plans and attitudes of developers writing for connected devices in the Internet of Things. Another highlight of the report was that 31% of IoT developers most associate Cloud computing with IoT, followed by Real-time Event Processing (25.8%), Big Data (17.3%) and Machine to Machine (15%).
“We’re still in the early stages of development for Internet of Things, even though forward thinking companies like Cisco and IBM have been promoting and enabling development for an interconnected world for the last several years,†said Janel Garvin, CEO of Evans Data Corp. “The needed technologies are now converging with Cloud, Big Data, embedded stems, real-time event processing, even cognitive computing combining to change the face of the technological landscape we live in, and developers are leading the way.â€
The new Internet of Things survey was conducted in six languages worldwide and covers such topics as demographics and development intentions, types of applications, languages and technologies in use, primary concerns, tools and technologies, connected car, and more.
