SANTA CRUZ, CA, June 2, 2003 -
Findings from Evans Data's third survey in the regionally based series, Europe, Middle East and Africa Development Survey Vol. 1 2003 (EMEA), have found that 58% of developers use open source software (OSS) but, in companies with more than 500 employees, 25% of developers indicated that company policies were the primary reason for not using OSS. In Evans' North American Development Survey, 21% of developers in companies with more than 500 employees cited company policy and in Evans' Asia Pacific Development Survey (APAC) that number climbed to 24%.
In companies with less than 500 employees corporate policy was the main factor for only 11% of responses and unfamiliarity with the technology was the primary reason for not using OSS. In the North American survey only 8% cited corporate policy and 20% cited concerns over intellectual property rights for not using OSS. In the APAC survey, 22% of developers in the smaller companies cite corporate policy as the main reason for not using OSS.
Other findings from the March/April survey of more than 450 developers in the EMEA region:
- Peer-to-peer technology is expected to be used by more than half of EMEA developers. Fifteen percent of developers indicate that they will "absolutely" use peer-to-peer technology in their network applications and 36% indicated that they would "probably" use the technology.
- Secondary operating systems vary across the globe. In EMEA, Linux is the most likely secondary OS developers use to develop with 20% of respondents selecting the open source OS. In the North American Development Survey, the secondary OS most selected was Microsoft's Windows 2000 OS, 22%, and in APAC it was also Windows 2000 at 19% but Linux is close at more than 16%.
