SANTA CRUZ, CA, June 10, 2003 - A new Evans Data Enterprise Development Management Issues Survey, conducted in May 2003, has found that 65% of large enterprises outsource some of their development, up from the low of 40% in early 2001. However, 13% of that outsourcing finds its way to offshore development houses in India, China and Russia, more than double the number from a year ago. The most likely projects to be outsourced are enterprise integration, security enhancements and work flow management projects.
Larger companies, more than 20,000 employees, are more likely to outsource development, 75% outsource some of their projects and 22% outsource more than 25% of their projects. Companies with IT budgets of more than $10,000,000 are also more likely to outsource development projects with more than 85% outsourcing at least some of their projects. Sixty one percent outsource up to a quarter of their projects and 7% outsource more than three quarters of their development projects.
Other findings from the May survey of more than 400 enterprise level development professionals:
- Two thirds of respondents, 67%, indicated that Linux is used at least some of the time on their corporate servers, up from 43% a year ago.
- More than 8 out of 10 developers say their companies already have WLANs in place, up more than 3 times since the last survey. However, 4 in 10 have been hit with denial of service attacks and a third have been penetrated by unauthorized users.
